Curated Collection: Dark Academia

The Dark Academia trend creates a striking space blending rich colours and ornate finishes to create a gothic and introspective atmosphere. But can it be applied to the bathroom? Keep reading to see how you can transform your space.

The Dark Academia aesthetic has taken the design world by storm over the past few years, captivating those with a passion for classic literature, vintage styles, and a moody, intellectual vibe. Often associated with rich colour palettes, antique furnishings, and an overall sense of timeless sophistication, Dark Academia finds itself blending seamlessly into every corner of the home - including the bathroom.

While the bathroom might not be the first room that comes to mind when thinking of Dark Academia, this elegant and mysterious aesthetic can transform even the smallest of spaces into a private sanctuary for reflection, reading, and self-care.

How to create a Dark Academia aesthetic

The hallmark of Dark Academia is its rich and deep colour palette. Think dark browns, deep greens, charcoal greys, and dusky blues, with hints of gold or brass accents. Stick to these dark shades for the walls whether you're opting for paint, tiling or panelling. A feature or accent wall is a great way to incorporate this without feeling overwhelmed. Matte or satin finishes are best for capturing the low-light, introspective mood of Dark Academia.

Choose antique or vintage-inspired finishes for taps, lighting and handles. Lighting fixtures can be a great way to experiment with this trend, a brass or antique gold sconce with a frosted or amber shade can create a warm glow without switching the mood. Mirrors with an ornate gold frame are another perfect accessory for the trend.

What sets Dark Academia apart from other trends is its intellectual, somewhat literary vibe. Incorporate a bookshelf with classic literature and decorate with framed black-and-white photography, vintage botanical prints or oil paintings in dark, moody frames. Classical portraits, vintage maps, and old-world illustrations also work well in this context

Add life to smaller spaces with ivy, small ferns and trailing plants. Or go big with large potted plants like rubber plants, snake plants, or larger ferns to fill corners, or hanging plants for a more dramatic effect. Finally, add candles in deep scents like sandalwood or amber to fill the room with a warm, musky fragrance.
